A new book about the Geology of Weardale is being launched at a special event on Friday 30th May.
The book, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund through the Mineral Valleys Project, is a companion to the Archaeology & Architecture of Weardale book launched back in March and has been published by the Weardale Society – a local community group that was set up by a group of Weardale residents to draw the various settlements of the dale together to make people more aware of the area’s unique heritage. The Weardale Society has been supported during the project by Groundwork West Durham and Darlington.
This fascinating new book titled, ‘History in the Landscape; The Geology of Weardale’ has been written by geologist Alistair Bowden.
June Crosby of the Weardale Society said, “There is considerable interest in geology, however, while there are many excellent books about the subject, they can be a little daunting for the novice so we thought a simplified book about the rocks, landscape and minerals of the dale would be useful”.
The launch event will take place in the Eco-Classroom at Harehope Quarry, just off the A689 outside of Frosterley, and will start at 7:30pm when the author will lead a Geological walk and will be on hand to answer any questions people may have. This is a free event and refreshments will be served so please contact June Crosby on 01388 528380 to reserve a place. The book will be available to buy at the event.
