The Mineral Valleys Project: Help walkers find their way on the Weardale way

Mineral Valleys Project logo Weardale Way

The improvement of a major regional walking route takes a significant step forward on Thursday 22 March when rights of way staff from Durham County Council will be way marking approximately 74 km of the Weardale Way from Sunderland Bridge near Durham to Cowshill in upper Weardale, all in one day. Individual officers have each been given a section of route to cover, so between them they will be able to tackle this major task.

As part of the Mineral Valleys Project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Durham County Council have carried out a programme of improvements along the Weardale Way. They have installed new gates, stiles and signposts. The next stage is for the route to be waymarked with specially designed arrows to be located at key points, that will help to ensure that walkers do not lose their way.

A new guidebook to the Weardale Way is due to be published soon by local author Alistair Wallace, and information about the route can also be found on a website www.weardaleway.com

We are continuing to develop a series of self-guided circular walks, based around villages along the route of the Weardale Way. The first of these walks, for Rookhope, had its leaflet published in 2006.
