Frank Atkinson and Andy Guy have co-authored a new book entitled ‘West Durham – Archaeology of Industry’ which will be launched at Beamish Museum on the 28th May.
This 304 page colour book captures the long, varied and dynamic industrial history of West Durham. It provides both a brief general introduction to the industries which made the region nationally and internationally important in the 18th, 19th and earlier 20th centuries, and a concise guide to several hundred surviving remains.
The Mineral Valleys Project supported by a £2.86 million Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant has assisted in the development of this book. The Mineral Valleys Project is coordinated by Natural England and has supported a number of environmental initiatives in West County Durham.
The book will be launched at Beamish Museum on Wednesday the 28th May 2008 from 6:30pm.
The authors will make a presentation and a buffet with drinks will be provided. Copies of the book which is published by Phillimore will be available at the launch for £25 each.
If you would like to attend the launch please RSVP to Jonathan Reed on Tel: 0191 229 5496 or Email: jonathan.reed@naturalengland.org.uk

Mineral Valleys Project
- The Mineral Valleys Project is a £5.2m English Nature led environmental regeneration programme that runs between 2003 and 2008.
- A Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £2.8m is matched by 50 organisations in the Mineral Valleys Partnership, to fund a series of initiatives in West County Durham, restoring natural habitats, encouraging wildlife and increasing access to the countryside and its heritage for everyone to enjoy.
- Natural England works for people, places and nature to conserve and enhance biodiversity, landscapes and wildlife in rural, urban, coastal and marine areas. We conserve and enhance the natural environment for its intrinsic value, the wellbeing and enjoyment of people, and the economic prosperity it brings.
