The Mineral Valleys Project is a £5.2m Natural England led environmental regeneration programme that runs between 2003 and 2008.
The Project is funded by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £2.8m which is matched by 50 organisations in the Mineral Valleys Partnership. It consists of a series of initiatives in west County Durham, restoring natural habitats, encouraging wildlife and increasing access to the countryside and its heritage for everyone to enjoy.

Aims and objectives
Across the 14 initiatives there are 6 broad aims and objectives, these are:
- To enhance the natural and cultural heritage
- To improve physical access
- To improve intellectual access to heritage
- To build skills and knowledge
- To build capacity in the community
- To benefit the local economy
