  • Cumbria Flood Coordinator received by The Queen

    (7 December 2010)  12 months after the extreme flooding of the River Derwent that saw Cockermouth residents airlifted to safety, bridges washed away and many thousands of tonnes of gravel and debris deposited in surrounding fields, Sandy Brown, Natural England’s Catchment Sensitive Farming Officer, has been recognised by The Queen for her role helping farmers deal with the devastating consequences of the flood.

  • Disabled Ramblers discover the Ribble Estuary NNR

    (26 October 2010)  No less than 24 mobility-assisted ramblers recently visited the Ribble Estuary NNR, a salt marsh of national importance to migrating birds. Hosted by Natural England at the best time of year to see these birds, the group enjoyed the use of off-road mobility scooters or ‘trampers’, making the 8 mile round trip a pleasure for all.

  • Funding Boost for National Nature Reserve

    (24 May 2010)  Natural England has received more than £174,000 in a funding boost from SITA Trust to help restore three lowland raised bogs, commonly known as peat bogs, on the Solway Coast. Over 34ha of lowland raised bog has already been restored by Natural England at three Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) which form part of the South Solway Mosses National Nature Reserve (NNR): Bowness Common, Glasson Moss and Wedholme Flow.
