Lake District National Park Authority seeks new members

Environment Secretary David Miliband has called for applications to become members of the Lake District National Park Authority.

Successful candidates will understand the concept and practice of sustainable development and will be drawn from a broad range of backgrounds that represent the country as a whole. Applications are particularly encouraged from members of ethnic minorities, young people, and disabled people.

One appointment will begin in the autumn of 2007 whilst a further appointment will begin in spring 2008. The appointments are initially for four years with the option of re-appointment for a period of up to ten years.

Expenses and travel to meetings, along with an allowance, are payable to successful candidates.

The Lake District National Park Authority works to conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage within the Park’s boundary and to help improve public understanding and enjoyment of the area.

The successful appointees will be expected to provide a national voice, and take a particular interest in strategic issues particularly land management, environment/conservation and business. However, whether members are appointed by the Secretary of State, the constituent local authorities or the parishes, they are all expected to reflect both local and national interests in their decision making.

Application forms and further details can be obtained from: Sandra Kennedy, Natural England, Northminster House, Northminster Road, Peterborough, PE1 1UA; Tel: 01733 455202; Fax: 01733 568834; email: Sandra.Kennedy@naturalengland.org.uk or see the Defra website.

The application period closes on Monday 2 July.
