Natural England is the Government’s statutory adviser on landscape, with specific responsibilities for National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Heritage Coasts.
Landscape doesn’t just mean rural landscape, and Natural England's work includes influencing policy makers to consider the different types of landscape character when taking decisions.
At the regional and local level, influencing planners to allow for good quality green space close to where people live is another key area of our work. This is a particular priority in the ‘Growth Areas’ of Thames Gateway, Ashford, M11 corridor (London, Peterborough, Stansted, Cambridge) and Milton Keynes/South Midlands.
Natural England is also involved in many practical environmental land management and habitat projects, including the LIFE Programme - a European Union initiative providing funding to encourage sustainable development and assist in the implementation of the European Commission’s environmental policies.
Through the Sustainable Land Management Campaign, Natural England wants to engage with the public across England to help them recognise, shape and strengthen the benefits a properly managed natural environment can provide.
