Natural England - Early closure of Access to Nature - FAQs

Early closure of Access to Nature - FAQs

Why is the programme closing now?

Access to Nature opened to applications in April 2008 and since then has been attracting a high level of good quality applications from a range of groups targeted by the programme.

The number of applications has been kept under constant review by the Project Team and with the range that are now in the pipeline the decision has been taken, in consultation with the Big Lottery Fund, to bring forward the deadline for applications.

We have taken this decision in order to avoid a heavily over subscribed programme towards the end of its life with diminishing funds to give out. We are keen to give people thinking of applying as much notice as possible and we have put in place a number of actions to let people know of the timing changes.

When will the programme be closed?

Access to Nature closed to Stage 1 applications on 1st February 2010. Stage 2 applications need to be received by 9am on 4th May 2010. For Stage 2 applications you will also have a further two days available to submit hard copies of the application as required, therefore these need to be received at our Peterborough office by 9am on 6th May 2010.

To avoid a bunching up of applications we would suggest that submissions are sent to us as much ahead of the closure date as possible.

Will the programme reopen?

We think it is unlikely the programme will reopen due to the high number of current applications received and those we expect to receive over the notice period. Therefore we anticipate being able to present to the selection panels sufficient high quality applications to enable effective use of the available funds.

Due to the success of the programme we recommend that those thinking of applying submit applications within good time.

Why was this information not made public much earlier?

We have been monitoring the levels of demand for first stage applications and those invited to full application for some time but the demand has not decreased or dropped. Therefore, we took the decision to provide over six months notice of the planned early closure to give those planning to apply a reasonable amount of notice to put together a good application.

How long will it take to assess my Stage 2 Application?

We aim to complete the assessment within 120 working days.

Are particular project types, themes, regions under or over represented?

We have a good spread of applications geographically across England and an interesting spread of projects that reflect the aims and objectives of the Access to Nature programme.

We would strongly recommend a discussion with your Access to Nature Regional Adviser who may be able to provide guidance about any specific gaps in your region.

How quickly should I submit my application if I’m invited to full application stage?

We would suggest that submissions are sent to us as much ahead of the closure date as possible to avoid a bunching up of applications.

What size of grant can I apply for? Is there still enough money available to fund larger projects?

Organisations can still apply for up to £500K for their projects. However, with limited funding available and with competition likely to be very strong you need to consider the amount of funding you may require and the timeframe left remaining of the programme.

If I’m invited to full application stage do I need to submit it straight away to ensure there is funding available for my project?

The earlier you submit your project the better as there has been strong competition for funding and we expect this to continue.

Can my Access to Nature grant request increase from the amount at first stage application to that submitted at full stage?

This is possible however, you will need strong justification if it is planned to change the project significantly.

Is there any additional criteria now?

No. The programme criteria is set out in the Guidance Notes for all grants. Bringing in new criteria now would be unfair to all applicants past and present.

Is it a more competitive programme now?

Competition for funding has always been part of the programme and with a grant pot of £25 million there is only a limited number of projects we can fund. We are looking to support quality projects that can demonstrate they meet our overall objectives of the Programme by reaching the key target groups we have identified.
