Natural England - Volunteer stories

Volunteer stories

Natural England has over 2,200 volunteers across the country, offering help on National Nature Reserves (NNRs) and Sites of Special Scientific Interest, providing expert advice on protected species to members of the public and helping with projects or administration in regional teams.

Roles for volunteers in Natural England

There are a number of traditional volunteer roles, including those described in the case studies below:

Volunteer NNR warden

Volunteer batwarden

Volunteer batwardens help regional teams by giving advice to members of the public who have discovered bats in their property.

Other volunteer roles

The roles mentioned above are certainly what the majority of Natural England's volunteers do - you could say that they are our speciality. However, some teams also offer the chance of project based or office/administration work.

  • 'Nature Neil'

'Nature Neil' is not the nickname of the suspected naturist whose bare footprints have been seen in the mud on Chippenham Fen National Nature Reserve (strange but true!), but the dedicated volunteer who plays an important role in the monitoring and management of the fenland.
