Geological Interest

This site is well known and provides a classic and nationally significant exposure through the so-called 'rag and hassock' beds of the Cretaceous Lower Greensand. These alternating layers of sandy limestone and calcareous sandstone were deposited in a shallow sea and in the past, when the quarry was operating, yielded a rich and diverse fossil brachiopod and bivalve fauna.
