The coastal section at Withow Gap, Skipsea shows a section through lake deposits which occupy a hollow in the till (or boulder clay) deposited by the last ice sheet of the Ice Age, some 20,000 years ago. The lake deposits contain fossil plant and snail remains and provide important information on climatic and environmental change following the melting and retreat of the ice sheet some 13,000 years ago.
