The NNR comprises a range of coastal habitats: intertidal sands and mud, sand and shingle bars, saltmarsh, sand dune, freshwater and salty pools and grazing marshes.

Although most NNRs are managed by Natural England, 88 are wholly or partly managed by other bodies approved by Council, under Section 35 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Holme Dunes NNR is owned and managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.

The dunes are 0.5 km north west of Holme next the Sea and five km north east of Hunstanton.
By car, access is via a minor road from the A149. There is a car park adjacent to the reserve.
The nearest train stations are in Sheringham (35 km to the east) and King's Lynn (25 km to the south west). Bus services from these stations to Hunstanton and local villages are provided by Norfolk Green.
The reserve is on the route of a major trail, the Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path, and is near Route one of the Sustrans National Cycle Network.
There are toilets near the car park at the entrance to the reserve. The nearest refreshment facilities are in local villages but these are also provided by a seasonal visitor centre which is open from Easter to October.
There are hides at the reserve and a four km nature trail. The trail is free to Norfolk Wildlife Trust members, but non-members need to acquire a permit from the visitor centre.
There is disabled access to one of the hides.
