Natural England - Pevensey Levels NNR

Pevensey Levels NNR

Pevensey Levels NNR lies in the heart of a large grazing marsh which is home to many species of wetland bird.

Pevensey Levels NNR

County: East Sussex

Main habitats: Open Water, Lowland Grassland

Area: 184 Ha

Site map: Nature on the Map.

Although most NNRs are managed by Natural England, 88 are wholly or partly managed by other bodies approved by Council, under Section 35 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Pevensey Levels NNR is part owned and managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust. The remainder is owned and managed by Natural England.

Many types of flowering water plant grow here, some of which are nationally rare. There are high numbers of dragonflies and damselflies present and the site is among the top five locations in Great Britain for aquatic beetles.

Location and access

Access to the part of the reserve owned by the Sussex Wildlife Trust is by permit only, but the Trust organises guided walks in the summer.

The part of the NNR owned by Natural England is currently closed to the public. This is because the site is so fragile that any form of access would damage the wildlife interest.

Facilities

The nearest toilet and refreshment facilities are in local villages.
