Although most NNRs are managed by Natural England, 88 are wholly or partly managed by other bodies approved by Council, under Section 35 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Pevensey Levels NNR is part owned and managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust
. The remainder is owned and managed by Natural England.
Many types of flowering water plant grow here, some of which are nationally rare. There are high numbers of dragonflies and damselflies present and the site is among the top five locations in Great Britain for aquatic beetles.
Access to the part of the reserve owned by the Sussex Wildlife Trust is by permit only, but the Trust organises guided walks in the summer.
The part of the NNR owned by Natural England is currently closed to the public except for the eastern-most field. This is because the rest of the site is so fragile that unrestricted access would damage the wildlife interest. Guided walks are organised by Natural England, for details telephone the Senior Reserve Manager on 07971 974401 or Reserve Manager on 07825 386620.
The nearest toilet and refreshment facilities are in local villages.
