Birdlife on the site includes woodlark, nightjar, Dartford warbler and occasionally hobby. The reserve is home to an important invertebrate population, including 20 species of dragonfly.

Location and access

The NNR is on the western boundary of the New Forest, 3 km to the south east of Ringwood (on the A31) and 2 km to the south west of Burley Street village. There is a car park near the reserve on the minor road from Burley Street to Crow village.

There is a mainline train station in Bournemouth (16 km to the south west) and a regular National Express coach service from Bournemouth to Ringwood.

Although the NNR can be visited at any time of year the mires become waterlogged, and dangerous to cross, in winter.
