The NNR is a shallow lake fringed with water plants. Most of the reserve is open water. The lake's edge has reedbed, herb fen and blanket bog. It is used extensively by wildfowl and waders that feed in the shallow waters and wetlands.

Although most NNRs are managed by Natural England, 88 are wholly or partly managed by other bodies approved by Council, under Section 35 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Greenlee Lough NNR is owned and managed by the Northumberland Wildlife Trust
and the Northumberland National Park.![]()
Greenlee Lough is five km north of Bardon Mill, and three km north of the B6318.
A summer bus service runs from Greenhead to Hexham.
The best time to visit is during the spring or summer.
There nearest toilet and refreshment facilities are in local villages.
The reserve has a birdwatching hide and a nature trail. Leaflets and interpretation panels are provided for visitor information.
