Bradfield Woods are almost entirely of ancient origin. A working wood that has been under continuous traditional management since 1252.

Although most NNRs are managed by Natural England, 88 are wholly or partly managed by other bodies approved by Council, under Section 35 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

The reserve supports around 350 plant species and is home to a range of woodland birds and mammals that are favoured by the traditional management techniques practised at the site.
The best time to visit the site is between April and mid-July.
The reserve is 12 km south east of Bury St Edmunds, one km west of the village of Gedding.
By car, access is via minor roads from the A14, A134, A1141 and B1115. There is a car park at the entrance of the reserve on the minor road from Gedding to Maypole Green village, 1.5 km to the west.
The nearest train stations are in Bury St Edmunds and Thurston (nine km to the north).

There is a hide in the reserve and three waymarked nature trails, between one km and three km in length.
Some parts of the reserve offer easy access in dry weather.
