Natural England - East Devon

East Devon

A richly coloured landscape. Sandstone cliffs back the pebble beaches, their vivid Devon red startlingly broken by the white chalk headland at Beer, where boats land crab and lobster but no longer contraband.

East Devon Heritage Coast

Further east, soft, unstable rocks make this a coastline of unusual significance to geologists and botanists; the Downland Landslip near Axmouth is a National Nature Reserve.

Part of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the coastline forms part of the South West Coast Pathexternal link, Britain's longest National Trail. It is also overlapped by the Dorset and East Devon World Heritage Siteexternal link, the first natural World Heritage Site on mainland Britain.

Generations of holidaymakers have left their mark! Screening and landscaping of established car and caravan parks continues to be important work on this Heritage Coast.
