On Thursday 26 January the Secretary of State announced her decision to approve the first stretch of the England Coast Path at Weymouth Bay between Portland and Lulworth.

We will publish detailed maps of the approved route at Weymouth Bay on this page in due course.
Work is now underway to prepare the new stretch of coast path for public use. The first step is to contact owners and occupiers of the affected land to discuss the design and location of any new infrastructure that is needed, such as signs and gates.
When preparations are complete, new access rights will come into force along the route and adjoining spreading room. We expect this to happen shortly before the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events which will take place at Weymouth Bay in July 2012.

On Tuesday 22nd March 2011 we submitted a report to the Secretary of State setting out our proposals for improved access to the coast at Weymouth Bay. It has now been approved by the Secretary of State, with certain modifications. The original report is still available to view on our website.

Before publishing the report we consulted on Draft Proposals for Weymouth Bay. The Draft Proposals are still available to view on our website. We have also published a short summary of the consultation which describes the responses we received and the main changes made to our proposals as a result.
