Coastal Access in Somerset: Brean Down to Minehead

Work has been ongoing on proposals for improved public access along a 90km stretch of the Somerset coast between Brean Down and Minehead, including the Parrett Estuary up to Bridgwater. We expect the new access to be ready at some time during 2014.

Officers from Somerset County Council are working closely with us to develop the proposals, providing expert local advice and ensuring there is full consultation with local interests.

Latest update – May 2013

We have written to landowners along the coast between Brean Down and Minehead to introduce the work and the process that we will follow.

Walking the course

During 2012/13, we have been visiting all the coastal land that is likely to be affected, to explore options for improving coastal access in detail and discuss them with the people who own and manage the land. We call this process "walking the course".

Public consultation

We have been looking carefully at all the options and are preparing proposals for public consultation. Our proposals will be published here on our website. Any member of the public will be able to comment on them. We expect the public consultation will take place in late summer 2013.
