Subject: Agri-Environment Scheme Maps
Description: We have an interactive map showing all land currently in Agri-environment Schemes. These Schemes are publicly-funded and provide payments to farmers who, in return, agree to manage their land for the benefit of the environment.
There is an information tool to enable you to click on any of the coloured areas on the map to find out which scheme that land is in.

Subject: Agricultural Land Classification Maps and Reports
Description: The Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) provides a method for assessing the quality of farmland to enable informed choices to be made about its future use within the planning system.
A national map showing five grades of land is available at 1:250,000 scale. Other map products, including detailed surveys for selected locations showing the subdivisions of Grade 3 land and accompanying reports, are also available.

Subject: Ancient Woodland Inventories
Description: Maps of all ancient woodland sites in England.
Availability: Digital Boundary data for England’s Ancient Woodland (Provisional) are available on the GIS dataset pages of the Natural England website. The inventories are also available as pdf versions on a county basis from Natural England’s Enquiry Service. These include information on how the data was collected by county. These are also available from the MAGIC website and the National Digital Archive of Datasets (NDAD) which is part of The National Archive. NDAD preserve and provides online access to archived digital data and documents from UK central government departments.
Subject: Environmental Impact Assessment (Agriculture) Regulations 2006
Description: The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations aim to protect uncultivated land and semi natural areas from being damaged by projects to increase the productivity of land for agriculture. They also guard against the negative environmental effects from the restructuring of rural land holdings. Natural England is responsible for administering these regulations and entering screening decisions in the public register.

Description: Datasets held by Natural England that are now available for downloading via the internet. The data is suitable for use in a Geographic Information System (GIS). Other digital data, such as background mapping, is not included. The Datasets are divided into topics, such as "National Nature Reserves". Some Datasets, such as "Sites of Special Scientific Interest", are available by topic in convenient 100km files, Most Datasets, such as "Natural Areas", are available as a single "England-wide" file.

Description: A searchable list of the 1300 plus Local Nature Reserves managed by local authorities.

Description: A list of the 224 sites Natural England has designated as National Nature Reserves including information on their name, location, region, and habitat type and ownership status.

Subject: List of outstanding land in England conditionally exempt from inheritance tax
Description: A searchable list of each property by region. Information on each property includes a brief description of the land, directions for access, National Grid reference, contact name and addresses for property, a map of the exempt property and information regarding the undertakings (conditions of exemption).

Description: A list of all requests received by Natural England under the Access to Information legislation and logged on the R Track (our electronic request tracking system).

Subject: List of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) in England
Description: A searchable list of each site by county and district. Information on each SSSI include the area, National Grid reference, date and reason for designation (citation), condition, operations likely to cause damage and our views about management.

Subject: List of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs)
Description: A list of sites designated under the EU Directive on the conservation of natural habitats and wild flora and fauna (92/43/EEC) including proposed (candidate) sites.
Availability: Available from the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) website. GIS datasets of SACs are available on the GIS dataset pages of the Natural England website.
Subject: Maps of National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) and Heritage Coasts
Description: Dyeline maps with an Ordnance Survey base showing the definitive boundary of each of the National Park and AONBs ate either 1:63360, 1:50000 or 1:25000 scale, depending on the area.
Dyeline maps are also available for each of the Heritage Coasts at a scale of 1:100000. These maps are of an historical nature and the base detail may not be entirely up to date.

Subject: Maps of Open Country and Registered Common Land
Description: The maps prepared by the former Countryside Agency of all open country and registered common land in England (the Countryside Council carried out the same task in Wales). This is a statutory duty under the countryside and Rights of way Act 2000.
Availability: Conclusive maps are available to view online on the Natural England website or available to purchase from our Open Access Contact Cente. Charge £15 per paper map plus £5 postage and packing.
Subject: Maps of Regional Walks
Description: ‘Walks in your Region’ maps which show walks of interest in each region. 23 Each map has a detailed reproduced ordnance survey map displaying the walk, details of the length of the walk and a key to points of interest along the walk. It also explains what level of fitness will be required, such as whether it is tranquil or strenuous. Links in with our Walking.

Subject: National Character Area (NCAs) Maps, previously known as Joint Character Areas (JCAs) Maps
Description: The Countryside Character map was produced in 1996 combining Natural Areas and Countryside Character Areas into a map of 159 Joint Character Areas (JCAs) for the whole of England. In 2005 the Character of England Landscape, Wildlife and Cultural Features Map was produced by Natural England’s with support from English Heritage, was an update to the 1996 map. This map subdivides England into 159 National Character Areas (NCAs) and it provides a picture of the differences in landscape character at the national scale.

Description: A searchable list of all the 120 terrestrial, coastal and marine Natural Areas through which Natural England is delivering many of its objectives for nature conservation outside of special/statutory sites. Includes maps and descriptions.

Subject: Open Access Maps
Description: Under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000(CROW) open access land has been mapped, thus helping landowners manage the new public rights. The new rights came into effect across all of England on 31 October 2005. The public can now walk freely on mapped areas without the need to stick to paths.
Availability: The Natural England Open Access website contains online Open Access Maps with the most up-to-date information on the location of access land you can walk on or contact Natural England’s Open Access Contact Centre.
Subject: Criminal and civil sanctions undertaken by Natural England in relation to offences that we are responsible for enforcing.
Description: As part of our work we are responsible for enforcing the law in relation to the following policy areas: SSSIs, breaches of species licences that we issue, Environmental Damage (Prevention and Remediation) Regulations, Heather and Grass Burning Regulations, Environmental Impact Assessment for uncultivated land and semi-natural areas, pesticide poisoning of animals, and injurious weeds.
Since January 2012 we now have, in addition to criminal sanctions, a broader suite of civil sanctions available to us.
Availability: A public register of the cases in which we have brought a prosecution or served a civil sanction is available on the Natural England website. We also record Enforcement and Third Party Undertakings that have been offered and accepted, and record whether a person has fulfilled all the requirements satisfactorily and in the time agreed by reporting whether a completion certificate has been served or not.

Description: The UK Air Pollution Information System provides a comprehensive source of information on air pollution and the effects on habitats and species. It is a support tool for staff in the UK conservation and regulatory agencies, industry and local authorities for assessing the potential effects of air pollutants on habitats and species. As such, it aims to enable a consistent approach to air pollution assessment across the UK. Other potential users include non-governmental organisations, universities, students or anyone interested in finding out more about air pollution effects on wildlife.
